STRIDE is a multi-disciplinary, educational organization specializing in therapeutic recreation-related services for individuals with disabilities. STRIDE's primary efforts focus on directing and providing enriching, recreational opportunities for individuals with disabilities or special needs. Programs are designed to provide successful, fun experiences in athletics or recreational endeavors, as a means to develop a positive self-image and confidence. STRIDE has received many achievement awards because of this work.

What makes STRIDE unique, is that our programs are cost-free for participants, and run completely on a volunteer basis. Fund raising efforts are primarily to provide equipment, cover program expenses and general management expenses. STRIDE recognizes the financial challenges for families rearing a child with a disability. STRIDE contributes to each child's growth by offering the resources and opportunities that are often considered too costly for families to provide. We do not cater to any one type of disability. Our programs are non-discriminating and we open our doors to everyone, and try to offer ourselves as a resource to experience the joy in recreation. We hope to continue our growth and would like to thank all those involved. Without the generous outpouring of efforts from sponsors, volunteers, contributors and families, none of this would be possible.

STRIDE Programs

STRIDE's Programs are what makes STRIDE so much fun.

Our skiing and snowboarding program is the nucleus of STRIDE, and is based at Jiminy Peak Resort in Hancock, Massachusetts and now also at Catamount Mountain in Hillsdale, NY. Our professionally trained and certified staff of 60+ instructors taught 800 adaptive lessons in the 2002 season.

In the fall of 1990 a group of eight campers and a dozen volunteers spent a weekend in tents, and Camp STRIDE was born. The success of the skiing program paved the way for a warm-weather activity, and the camping trips have been hugely popular ever since.

The STRIDE bowling program was introduced in the summer of 1994, and is offered four times a year for 10 weeks at Bowling Green in East Greenbush, NY. A perennial favorite, our bowlers return season after season, for the strikes, fun and pizza parties!

The spring of 1991 saw the inception of a new STRIDE endeavor, adaptive baseball. The Twin Town Little League Challenge Division represented two teams the first year, and continues to do so today with a program that has more than doubled in size.

A one-of- a-kind curriculum, STRIDE offers the chance to learn to sail rigged sloops, after five weeks of indoor classroom instruction followed by a weekend of sailing at YMCA's Camp CHINGACHGOOK on Lake George, NY.

Snowshoeing is slightly more aerobic then walking as snowshoes sink slightly into soft powder. Snowshoeing is a graceful and thrilling athletic endeavor. This is an experience and opportunity with only positive results and maximum enjoyment.

STRIDE is pleased to announce a new site for our swim program. Our recreational swimming program is now hosted at the brand new East Greenbush YMCA 20 Community Way, off Route 151 near Columbia High School. The program is designed for participants to play or have informal one-on-one swim instructions from our adult swimming volunteers.
